FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
CAN I CUSTOMIZE AN ITEM THAT ISNT A PAIR OF SHOES?
The answer is both yes and no. Without a doubt, I can absolutely customize any type of object you’d have in mind! Hydros, bags, hats However, the main issue I am faced with in the process is the durability of the paint on the specific surface. In order for the paint to stay & not chip/crack, the surface has to adhere to the paint. So yes I can customize any object you have in mind, but there's a likely chance that the paint will chip.
WHAT MATERIALS ARE USED TO MAKE THE HAND PAINTED DESIGNS?
All of the products used to paint Lawless Custom Sneakers are Angelus Direct Leather paints & other Angelus products, such as their leather preparizer, thinner, duller, fabric medium additives, etc. One exception being my favored choice of paint sealer, which is the Liquid Kicks factory finish leather paint sealer.
WHAT IS THE RATE OF EACH COMMISSION, AND HOW IS IT CALCULATED?
Every pair of custom sneakers differ greatly, which reflects in the individual prices. Not only because of the one-of-a-kind uniqueness in their design, but also the preparation process behind each pair. My rates are calculated based off of 2 main factors- Materials & Detail. Material costs take up a large chunk of the rates for custom sneakers. To start off each project with a blank canvas, a new pair of sneakers must be purchased. The total for each pair can range from $50-200 (sometimes more depending on the model and brand) plus tax. A majority of the cost of customs goes towards purchasing the individual pair. Each pair requires a fair amount of paint & product to be applied, which adds to the material costs so I can keep my paints stocked up for the following projects I create. The final factor into material costs is less obvious, but critical towards running a custom business. Mostly consisting of marketing materials such as website expenses, business cards & other stationery items. As far as labor goes, I am one artist managing a buttload of custom projects all at once. Each project takes a bare minimum of 5 hours to make, and that time can extend up to 30+ hours depending on the detail. So let's do some math- I would say the average custom pair takes around 12 hours. If we are using Washington's current minimum wage, then we’ll multiply $13.75 by 12 and get roughly $165 as the labor cost for one 12 hour project. Adding on the costs of materials, which depending on the shoes can range from $70-150, the total cost would be ticking in the $300s, plus the cost of shipping on top of it. Though currently, I charge less for my custom commissions. On average, the rates for a Van's custom designs can range from $130-200, while Nike brand customs usually range from $180-300.
